When it comes to transport over long distances, there is still no real alternative to railway. The demand to move goods and people from the road to the railway is driven mainly by environmental concerns (lower emissions than in road traffic) and safety concerns (fewer accidents). There are also economic arguments that describe a reduction of costs and thereby an improvement of the economic efficiency, through rail capacity and continuity.
With rail networks, like road networks, its more about optimizing and maintaining the existing infrastructure than it is about new developments. Line efficiency or line congestion is an economic limiting factor in certain regions of Germany. In areas with high capacity utilization, especially in high-speed and freight traffic, protective measures against airborne and structure-borne noise emissions are urgently required.
